What is Neocities Page

The Internet

How it all began...

During the Cold War, the United States government wanted a way for computers to communicate. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) funded a project to connect computers from universities to research institutions.

The ARPANET

  • On October 29, 1969, the Internet was born.
  • Lo and behold!

The World Wide Web

Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist, invented the WWW at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). You can experience the first website yourself with this link.

Lee then went on to create the first web server, web browser, HTML (the language of webpages), the URL (the unique addresses of webpages) and HTTP (the tech that lets web browsers and web servers talk to each other).

How does it work?

A network of computers

A network is a system of interconnected parts. One such system is the internet, which connects computers together.

In general, think of it as two types of computers, a server and a user.

A server hosts the website, the user consumes it.

Think of your own websites you have been making...

How does this relate to neocities?

GeoCities

Founded in 1994 as a free web hosting service to create webpages organized into neighborhoods.

It became one of the most popular websites of the early web.

It was acquired by Yahoo! in 1999, and shutdown in 2009.

Neocities

Founded in 2013 as a modern revival of GeoCities.

It provides free web hosting to emphasize open web standards, personal expression, and learning.

Now, head to Coder. Let's publish your website!
